My Students

I teach high school Spanish in a suburban school in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Many of my students are learning Spanish as their second language and I hope to instill a love for other cultures in my students as well as learning a language.

My students are curious, diverse, and open to trying new things.

When I ask them to share personal stories, they offer details with the class and do their best to share in Spanish! They offer creative ideas and challenge themselves on a daily basis when we tell stories, read novels, and listen to music and videos.

My Project

I am working to improve my students' literacy by offering them Free Voluntary Reading (FVR) time in Spanish class. In order for this time to be meaningful, I need to offer variety of books for students. Students learn Spanish by reading without even realizing it!

Frank Smith, PhD in Linguistics, says that "New words are learned with remarkable facility, especially in stories, when you are reading something that makes sense to you." I consistently remind my students that reading will help them learn vocabulary and therefore Spanish, especially when they are reading something that is interesting to them and at their level.
