Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them." William Lawrence Bragg. My kindergarten students are enthusiastic learners that are fascinated with science but lack the materials needed to explore the world around them.

I have 25 enthusiastic kindergarten students.

They feel happy when we do science and when they can go to the centers to use the materials that we are learning about. Our unit of fossils has the students interested in paleontologists and their field of work. The students come to school happy and eager to get the day started. All the students at my school receive free lunch and come from low-income households and a high poverty rate in our community.

My Project

The use of binoculars will allow the students to go on nature walks around our school garden and find different types of birds. Then the students can draw their birds in their nature journals. In the classroom we are talking about fossils, paleontologists, excavate and different types of dinosaurs. I want to set up different science centers in the classroom where the students can have a hands-on experience using magnifying glasses to look at the different types of fossils. I want the students to feel like real paleontologists in an excavation location inside the classroom. The students will learn the different types of resources that paleontologists use in order to record their findings and also use the academic science vocabulary for the unit.

The donations to this project will improve my classroom because the students will have the real tools and materials that paleontologists use to discover fossils.

The activity will allow students imagination and conversations about their findings and get them interested in becoming future paleontologists.
