My Project

The faculty is committed to providing our students with educational opportunities that will propel them into the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through theoretical concepts and application of those concepts to real life problems.

This year, the Honors Chemistry cohort will design a prototype “sandless” sandbag on a small scale.

The students will use dimensional analysis to extrapolate to a larger scale to determine the viability of this concept.

Burlap bags are reusable and convenient. They also fold away taking up little space. Since our experiment will be carried out on a small scale, we opted for mini burlap bags. These can be air dried and used for multiple iterations of the process.

Being an environmentally conscious school, we opted to focus on a reusable/biodegradable filler for our “sandbag”. Swedish dishcloths absorb up to sixteen times its weight in water and can be folded, shredded, rolled, or configured in a variety of ways to optimize absorption.

We will require a reusable container that can be used as a rain gauge and reservoir to test our prototype. Unfortunately, we were not able to source a container that was biodegradable, so we opted for reusable plastic cereal yogurt cups, which will allow us to determine exactly how much water is required for saturation.

We will use hot glue to re-seal any areas that do not conform to the required rainfall rates. Re-sealing is a part of the redesigning phase of the engineering aspect of STEM.
