Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine if your only materials to express yourself creatively were an 8 color set of fat crayons: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and "brown." Few people's skin is that exact shade of brown.

I teach in one of Boston's Public Schools which was deemed under-performing last year.

Now with a new staff, a new principal, but the same students and the same challenges, we are charged with helping each child succeed as they never have before. Most of my students live below the poverty line, many of whom live in single-parent families. All this means is that it is that much harder for my students to have the same opportunity to create, explore, and experiment. While trying to make sure instruction is spot on, I do still want to make space for creativity.

My Project

These materials are all art materials, focusing mainly on having "multicultural" colors available. I can't think of anyone who could draw their whole family accurately using just the standard "brown" provided. With these markers, paints, and crayons, we'll finally be able to make our work representative of our realities. This way we can do real art projects, portraits, and elaborate writing. Just being able to tell the students they are using REAL art materials from an art store will give them a boost of confidence and pride in themselves as artists. Who knows? With this opportunity, I might one day see their work on the walls of a museum!

In our quest to "leave no child behind," often every child is left behind.

We are so focused on preparing for testing, that we forget that each person in our rooms needs more than just academics. They need art, movement, music, and exposure to just about every cultural opportunity we can provide. I intend to try to do as much of this extra stuff as possible. I teach CHILDREN, not just curriculum. Thank you for your help!
