Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I help educate about 320 scholars in a one week period with scholars ranging from first grade all the way through fifth grade. Most of the scholars in my school have a lack of background knowledge as many of them don’t travel outside of the central area of the city. Some of the students I teach are not even able to communicate in English properly.

Despite the difficulties these lower-income students face, they always walk into our school ready to learn.

In this Title-1 school, located in central El Paso, our scholars have a great thirst for accomplishing great things. We use a variety of technology on our campus. From iPads and QR codes, to microscopes with television screens mounted on them, to some of the low-tech STEM activities where they learn about simple robotics and coding. Scholars at Travis Elementary get a variety of incredible knowledge.

My Project

Have you ever seen a movie and thought, I can make a movie like this! The students at Travis Elementary have experienced this feeling before. With a great donation, our students will have the opportunity to bring to life their stories, their books, and any idea that they have had before. After reading some of our students’ ideas for making a movie, I have full confidence our students would be able to accomplish this if they have the proper resources. The camera would allow our students to capture the best quality images to include in their projects. We currently have iPads but unfortunately the iPad only has limited capabilities to record and take pictures. Our students have grand ideas and I wanted to facilitate their creativity as much as possible.

I am prepared to spearhead an on-going after-school program to produce student made movies and enter in our El Paso Independent School District(EPISD) Film Festival and other film festivals around the region and state to compete on the highest level.

I would also like to be able to compete on a national film festival to ensure our students have the most exposure as possible. I believe this would give our students a leg on their education and give them to confidence to continue what they learn here at Travis Elementary and continue though their academic life.
