Working with students with disabilities provides me the opportunity to teach so much more than academics. I have the luxury of teaching social skills, functional communication, appropriate behaviors and cooking skills. Cooking food, measuring ingredients, following steps, combining elements, utilizing appliances and being safe are all important components to cooking skills instruction. With this curriculum, I will be able to teach, demonstrate and share all of these things with my students. They will learn to do these things in the classroom and hopefully generalize these skills at home. As students move from my classroom to their next classroom, they will have the basics to carry to the next grade level's instruction in cooking.
