These STEM sets would give me the opportunity to set up independent centers for my students to go and explore the world of Science with their peers. These sets will also give the students the opportunity to explore and experiment and see how things actually work.
I have been blessed to have the opportunity to teach at a wonderful Title I school.
With this being said, most of my students are considered to fall within the poverty level. My school is working on obtaining its STEAM certification. In the fall, each class was given a pumpkin to create a masterpiece using any STEAM related activity. My class loved this activity. We took one small pumpkin and turned it into multiple Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math lessons. We worked on this pumpkin and applied everything we were doing in class to something we could do with the pumpkin. It was a great feeling when several months later my students could still tell me about all the nocturnal animals we had studied. They could even apply what they had learned to new content that I was introducing. My class won "Best Overall"Â and they were overjoyed with excitement.
I will set up an area in the classroom so that the students will have the ability to go to the center with their group and complete activities on their own or with minimal assistance. This will give all the students the opportunity to develop their own independent learning. These sets will give the students an opportunity to see how cars actually move and why they go faster down an incline. It will give them the opportunity to explore what floats and why some things sink. The students will also be able to share with other classmates why they think something will happen and then complete the activity to see if they actually were correct and if not then the ability to find out why.
This project would give my students multiple opportunities to explore in ways that normally might not be available.
My class is made up of students who have a love for learning and exploring is their most favorite activity. The students really enjoy the ability to do hands-on activities and these sets would give them that opportunity. The different levels of the sets would also give each different level learner the ability to challenge them beyond their own grade level.
