Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school prides itself on our elective and CTE programs. These programs give students an opportunity to experience and explore fields they may have never imagined themselves being a part of. From these courses, many students have found the inspiration to continue their studies in high school and beyond. Some have even begun to pursue a career in these fields.

My Project

Our video production class has been asked to take on additional responsibilities during this unique school year. Our weekly video announcements are now the primary method by which our students who choose to remain online only receive news and connect with school. Assemblies will also be video only this year. Additionally, we have been asked to take over yearbook duties as well. This is in addition to the short films and other projects students produce for the class.

One of our focuses this year is diversity and inclusion; we want to make sure that what we put on video accurately reflects our diverse student population.

Our school is around 70% Latinx. Roughly 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and rely on programs such as our video production program to receive hands on experience in filmmaking, journalism, and media production. This is a chance for more voices to be heard and for the students to produce content that is important to them. Many of our students have been impacted by debate over racial equality in the recent news and wish to produce content addressing the issue from their perspectives. Their work will be submitted to film festivals and contests around the country.

We desperately need to purchase more equipment and protective gear to make sure our students are safe during this time. Our existing equipment is not enough for our students to safely share and some of our equipment, including our old tripods, are currently being used to hold health screening equipment. Last year, our program earn the distinction of producing the first Spanish language entry into a national drug abuse awareness contest and received a special judges prize for that accomplishment. We wish to continue our success with your help.
