This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle school students embarking on their first STEM Career Exploration course. They are enrolled in a Gateway to Technology course. They will be exploring Computer Science and Engineering Modules. Our school is a PLTW (Project Lead The Way) school. PLTW is an project-based curriculum that will allow my students to explore various STEM career pathways, by working on projects.

Help my middle school explorers see and learn about this career pathway through hands-on projects and explore the vast opportunities STEM careers offer.

I am worried that the pandemic will rob my students of the opportunity to explore careers in Computer Science and Engineering. I hope to continue igniting the spark I saw in their eyes when they learned about these courses being offered at our school. The resources I currently have are not conducive to individual use.

My Project

My incoming middle school students are really excited about their semester-long STEM class. In the current environment, shrouded by uncertainty around virtual and hybrid school, I'd like to continue to offer my students hands-on learning opportunities. Unfortunately, students will not be working in small groups on collaborative projects, but I'd like to simulate this as much as possible.

The STEM materials I'm requesting will be used by students during Instant Challenges to learn the engineering design process.

These Instant Challenges introduce students to the process engineers go through to design any given product. Students will be provided individual supply kits with the materials they need for the duration of each project. This will allow them to be creative and collaborate by presenting and critiquing each other's prototypes virtually.

Students will use felt, bandages, Velcro, duct tape, cardstock and other items to create an Ankle Foot Orthosis prototype for a child with Cerebral Palsy, a skimmer to transport materials, and a therapeutic toy for a child.

My students will also learn different types of sketching, including thumbnail, isometric, and multi-view, leading to 3D modeling (CAD) software. Students will also receive isometric and graph paper in their supply kits.

I hope to keep my students engaged and invested in their education by providing these hands-on projects during these trying times.
