My Students

The students at my school strive to be the best of the best in all areas of education: academics, sports, clubs, and arts. We compete with other schools on the field, in the classroom, and on the stage. They come from very diverse backgrounds, with many of their families living in poverty, but we teach these children that their background does not determine their success! We always strive for excellence!

My students constantly surprise and inspire me with their level of determination and perseverance.

One of my students auditioned for Honor Band and I was sad to tell him that he didn't pass the audition. As I was talking to him, he excitedly told me, "it's ok. I'll be ready for next year!" I love that my students are not accepting defeat and are constantly pushing to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.

Therefore I hope that whoever reads this project request can spare any kind of assistance that could help our organization reach our goal of giving these students the gift of music.

My Project

One of the biggest reasons a child joins an arts class is for the opportunity to express him/herself in new, fun, and creative ways. This is the same for band. My students love learning to play their instruments and they love performing other composers' works.

How amazing would it be for middle school students to create their own original compositions?

The National Standards of Music Education state that students should create, perform, and reflect. For class projects, I would love for my students to delve deeper into the concepts that they learn in class (meter, note durations, key signatures, melody, harmony, ostinato, and more) to create an original work, perform their work, and reflect on the entire process.

Currently, during freestyle collaborative learning opportunities in class, the students gather in a circle at the back of my room and take turns improvising until they come up with a melody they all like. Once their melody is selected, the other students build other parts until they have a full song. I want them to be able to write out their parts, electronically play back their parts, and print sheet music. The printed compositions will allow other classes to join in for performance.
