This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is filled with future politicians, artists, scientists, and many other types of change makers. We are a small public school, serving mostly Black and Latino students, most of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school, located in the heart of Harlem, is a part of NYC's "renewal" process, and all of us--school leaders, teachers, families and children--are eager to transform our school into something special. Our students are imaginative and filled with a love for learning.
These future change makers need your help.
An investment in our projects is an investment in these students' futures, and the future of our community.
We are a school filled with smart, compassionate, and energetic people, ready to make a difference in our community and the world!
My Project
Time and again I'm struck how my students need to learn skills for the future. Word processing and making slide decks are a minimum skills for today. However, coding is a skill (and hobby) that many of their wealthier peers have access to, and they do not.
This project is one half of a chrombook set I am putting together to start a "coding club." Using Code.org's curriculum I will teach my 5th graders the basics of coding, so that they can explore, imagine, and create, using 21st century tools and 21st century skills.
I know this club will create excitement in my classroom. It will also equip my students with vital skills for their future.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
