My Students

Our class participated in the Future City competition last year and was lacking the materials for the design. Many of the students did not bring in any materials to build a model. With these materials from the grant we will at least be able to build our own original designs.

Students in the class and school are very interested in computer based and hands on projects but often they do not know what is required to build a physical model of what they would design electronically.

With this project, students will be able to make connections between physical and virtual designs which would appeal to both computer savvy and more tactile learners. Our school is an inner city public school comprised of an array of students from various ethnic backgrounds, social economic circumstances, interests, and genders.

My Project

These resources will be used to design authentic backgrounds for the city including the water ways, parks, and roadways. The city will be designed vibrantly using the paints purchased as well. The construction paper along with the cotton balls will be used to construct and/or cover metal cans and plastic bottles to add depth and color to the city buildings, parks, and other city components. Overall, the resources will assist in ensuring that the design remains environmentally friendly by providing more "earthy" design constructs and systems.

Students enjoyed this project so much last year but was disappointed that their physical model did not achieve the same standards as their virtual model.

With the addition of the resources in this grant, the students will be able to demonstrate more confidence in their designing ability. Students did an outstanding job last year with presenting their design ideas however their physical model in spite of their outstanding knowledge of city planning made it difficult to support their expertise.
