My Students

"I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter." ~James Michener This is a quote I use often with my students when I teach the writing process. Then I introduce them to the magic of words.

I teach 5th grade at a small public school.

My students are eager to write small paragraphs but not so much essays. Unfortunately, many of them think that simply copying their first draft neatly is their final product. Some of this is because of the limited access to the resources necessary to enhance their writing. This coming year, our school has made writing one of our focus points. While students can learn the process of revision, they need to be able to utilize the resources that will help them enhance their writing and make it more effective and engaging.

My Project

My student do many kinds of writing and we read many genres of literature. We discuss things like: How did the author capture your attention? How did he keep your attention? What makes a book become a book that you can't put down? I then write a very simple story and have them use a thesaurus to help bring the story to life with adventure, mystery, humor and emotion. They become aware of a great resource that will help their writing engage the reader. Being a small school, we have limited resources. Having a class set of thesauruses would give students unlimited access and help them improve their writing by adding rich vocabulary. It will also help increase their vocabulary skills! At the end of each year, my students publish their own books. Having access to rich vocabulary and "just the right word" will make such a difference in their writing.

Sharing our limited thesaurus collection has worked but not without glitches.

Sometimes, students don't have access to a thesaurus without waiting. Sometimes, we have to wait for another class to finish with them. It would be great to have a whole class set of thesauruses so that my students can access them for their writing projects anytime.
