Our Students

The students in our school (Pre-K through 5th) are kind, hard-working and love challenges.

They take pride in their learning and helping one another. I’m very excited to bring two Social Emotional Therapy dogs to our school to support our young readers with their developing skills, as well as provide support for their social emotional developmental needs.

My Project

Our school was recently approved to have two certified therapy dogs! The dogs will work alongside their handlers to support the social emotional development and needs of our students through animal assisted interventions (AAIs) and animal assisted activities (AAAs). The materials are important to the program because they will ensure that our students have a positive learning experience working with the therapy dogs.

The benefits of reading to therapy dogs are many-developing social skills, build confidence, anxiety reduction, enhancing reading skills, increase focus and concentration, increase school attendance, improved social skills and empathy, stress relief, judgment free “zone” for growing readers. I believe the therapy dogs will increase our students’ love of reading and create an even more positive school environment.

I have asked for several items to begin our program. The dog beds will provide our therapy dogs a place to rest in between sessions with students. Treats and containers for each grade level will ensure we are reinforcing positive behavior. The ChuckIts will provide the dogs with a chance to play/run and get out some energy after working with the students and the Kongs will provide the dogs a mental challenge after reading with the students. The wipes will ensure that the dogs’ paws are clean entering the classroom. The books will be amazing resources for all readers. The weighted lap blankets and dogs will provide our students with an extra layer of security as they read.
