I am a Guidance Counselor/College Advisor at an alternative school in BedStuy, Brooklyn. Brooklyn Academy High School services students between 17 and 21 who have not given up on their High School Diploma. Our students come to us when they have not been successful in a traditional High School setting for many different reasons, but once here, about 90% graduate. From our 350 students, 80% qualify for free lunch, which demostrates their financial needs. The problem I have been running into is that many of their CUNY applications are never sent out because it is very difficult for them to obtain the application fee. CUNY will not process any application without the attached money order, regardless of the student's financial status. They will only accept the fee waivers they make available though we only get between 12 and 15 for each school year - certainly not enough. It is heart-wrenching to witness my students forfeit a college education just because of the initial fee. If they were accepted, they would be set because these same kids would qualify for full financial aid. Private schools do waive their fees but very few of my students have the grades to get in to a private school so in most cases, this is not an option. Any amount of money donated will be appreciated. I thank you for helping us through one of the hurdles getting in the way of our students' higher education.
