My Students

Fourth-grade students in my class have a phenomenal mixture of interests, needs, abilities, learning styles, and goals. Several of my students have learning disabilities or are developing social skills. Some have unique sensory needs. while many of their classmates are performing significantly above grade level. Our group is compassionate. We help others learn and grow.

In this class, we celebrate learning and work hard to reach individual and collective goals.

We recognize and take pride in learning--even if it does not look the same for everyone. We believe fairness is everyone getting what they need, not everyone getting the same. We build relationships through classroom meetings and cooperative activities. Students in my classroom share how they solve problems and are comfortable sharing when they solve them wrong. We all benefit from discussing the thinking process. The diversity of needs and abilities in my classroom creates a rich and rewarding learning experience for everyone.

My Project

Flexible seating allows young minds to be more focused and attentive. Being able to bounce, rock, wobble, lean, twist, and move helps oxygen flow to the brain. Furthermore, students are empowered by choice, so the bean bags, yoga balls, and whiteboard materials will provide my students the opportunity to have more control over where/how they learn in a way that helps them focus.

Flexible seating also provides sensory input that is especially helpful for my students with ADHD and Autism.

At the same time, having a spongy whiteboard eraser, noise-reducing headphones, and computer mouse will help my students be less distracted and better able to use the Chromebooks we have. Often the mouse pad is very difficult for some little fingers to click, drag, and select.

The materials in this project will greatly help me reach the diverse needs of my students. We will use the LEGOs in our science experiments to make learning hands-on at all levels. These tools will help us better use the materials we currently have and provide a safe and comfortable place for students to learn in the way they need.
