Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of us have at least one school project that we still remember doing and that brings us joy to think about. What's yours? For many of my students, it's our short film project.

My students are 10th graders who love a good story and learn by doing.

Many are striving to be the first in their families to attend college and several are English Language Learners whose families have immigrated to New York City. Our school, which opened in 2004, is an urban public school that offers grades 6-12 in a low-income area of one of the outer boroughs. Our school's mission is to provide the community with the best public school education possible. We want all students to graduate college or career ready, and this cannot be possible without making learning relevant to their passions and goals and giving them tools to broaden their worlds. One of these tools is technology, so that they can both access information and media and produce their own.

My Project

Each spring at the conclusion of reading Arthur Miller's The Crucible, my students embark on their own creative project with the goal of critiquing an issue or topic that's important to them. For this project, they work in small groups to write a script for, shoot, and edit a 3-5 minute short film that attempts to change or shape people's perception of an issue or topic that they care about. They show their films to their classes and the best films move on to compete in the 10th grade film festival. I have seen this project inspire students to pursue filmmaking on their own. Countless others come back year after year to say how much they remember the project. Over the years, students have wanted and tried to make higher quality films, but didn't have some simple tools to make this happen. These iPad 2, selfie stick and iPad mini would help them meet their goals!

Over the years, students have tackled issues like bullying, abusive relationships, gun violence, and depression through the short film project.

They've learned new things about the way they deal with these issues from each other. Additionally, students have learned how to collaborate. It seems like everyone finds their strength, a way to contribute. These materials would enable students to continue to have these experiences and to create even better quality short films.
