My Project

I am a Literacy Intervention teacher in Los Angeles. My school district has expanded its literacy intervention program from elementary schools into middle and high schools, to serve students who have low literacy levels but have slipped through the cracks. Some of my middle school students are five years below grade level. Most of them are “reclassified” English learners who no longer receive additional instruction in English. Some are students who lacked sufficient digital resources to get quality instruction during COVID school closures. Some have had chronic absences for various reasons. All of them need more help than they are receiving!

To my surprise, my new school and classroom lack the basics needed for instruction: a printer for my room, access to a working copier; and a way to project from a book.

I was given an 8-year-old document camera that has cables I don’t even recognize. These students face enough challenges without adding a lack of resources to the problem. Thanks in advance for helping my Reading Lab cohort become stronger students!
