My Students

I teach students with visual impairments ranging from low vision to total blindness. I have students across multiple schools in NYC. My students are in classrooms with sighted peers.

All of my students have visual impairments.

They access learning through braille or auditory means. Some of my students have visual impairments and additional disabilities - like deafblindness or learning disabilities. They are a diverse group of wonderful students, and they need lots and lots of stuff to support their learning!

My Project

We are living in the future and 3D printers are revolutionizing education! We would like a 3D printer to make tactile materials for our students who are blind.

By utilizing a 3D printer, we can make tactile maps, diagrams, and models to support learning for our students who are tactile learners.

Access to the core curricula is essential to ensure success in college. A 3D printer will allow us to print customized materials that allow our students to actively engage with and to explore concepts, especially in science and mathematics classes!

For example, instead of describing the structure of an atom of tin, we can 3D print a model of the atom that allows our students who are blind to physically manipulate the rings of atoms that surround the nucleus. When our students learn about surface area and nets, we can 3D print a variety of three dimensional shapes that can easily be decomposed into nets. Best of all, these materials will be durable and able to be easily reused year after year.

These tactile supports greatly improve our students' learning. This will make a huge difference in their conceptual understanding of the material in their classrooms.
