Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

More often than not, at the beginning of the school year a middle school student enters a math class with few good past experiences and little positivity or excitement. Mostly this stems from a lack of confidence in the subject, which then leads to decreased effort and thinking in Math class.

Our department is committed to increasing student confidence in math class through the use of knowledge mobility.

Knowledge mobility is the idea that everyone in the room has knowledge to share and that the teacher is not the only expert in the room. This gives students autonomy in their learning, accessibility to challenging content, and begins building the confidence they need to be successful.

Knowledge mobility comes from the research based strategies provided through Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Liljedahl. Our department has begun implementing these strategies and within a few months we already saw students working who previously sat and made no attempts. We have seen students collaborating who would stay silent. And most importantly we are seeing students confidence increase!

This knowledge mobility requires students to be up and collaborating at whiteboards instead of being stuck in their seats working alone. In order to make this happen, we need seating like the table and chairs in this project that allows for the space for students to collaborate effectively at those boards, allows for the teacher to efficiently reach each group of students, and allows students to safely move through the class to experience their peer's knowledge at different boards.

Our current furniture, combined with larger class sizes hinders the flow of knowledge mobility and our abilities as teachers to facilitate the Building Thinking Classroom strategies effectively. We thank you for any support you can give for us to bring confidence and excitement back into the math classroom!
