My Students

Welcome to Zucker Lightning Exceptional Children! This class serves students with a variety of moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in the self contained setting. We focus on all core areas of academics within our class with an emphasis on functionality. Our students are full of energy and creativity.

We celebrate our students' abilities and uniqueness.

As a teacher at a low income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges at home and at school. Despite the many challenges my students face at home, they enjoy being at school in order to experience new things while learning.

My Project

My goal and vision for my class is to prepare each student to be as independent as possible in all areas of their lives. We focus on daily living, social, community, and employability skills throughout the day. We have a curriculum provided by the district for reading and math; however, it does not focus on the foundational skills.

My students need to learn and master foundational skills before applying them to real life situations.

These materials will work on just that! The reading and math resources are leveled by ability levels which is perfect for my students. They focus on functional and foundational skills such as identifying by function and feature, categorizing, matching, wh questions, and more. These materials are structured throughout so students know what to expect day to day and become more independent.

Our classroom needs some additional resources such as real life visuals, data sheets, and paraprofessional trainings. These resources will benefit my students and the functioning of the classroom. Taking data is crucial for keeping track of progress. These data sheets will assist with staying organized and on top of my students' successes. Also, our paraprofessionals keep the classroom running, they are so important -- this is why they deserve meaningful training!

These resources will help build upon the foundation of our classroom which is focused on fostering independence, respect, and success.
