My Project

I have been learning more about our amazing brains and how we learn to read. My students are excited about listening to read-alouds and the lessons about comprehension strategies that tie in with each story. We love reading books, and listening to stories because it connects us with the characters and to each other. My 2nd-graders are all at different reading levels and abilities, and they are eager to grow and work hard. Our small reading group time is sacred for us, and a time where I can focus on the targeted, structured skills that each child needs to help them become stronger readers.

A quote by Dr. Martin Kozloff says "When a child memorizes ten words, the child can only read ten words, whereas if the child learns the sounds of ten letters, the child will be able to read 350 three-sound words, 4,320 four-sound words, and 21,650 five-sound words." Creating engaging and fun activities focused on phonics, letter recognition, and phonological awareness is the foundation of my teaching and their learning to read.

The Playdough, Playfloam, and sand will be used for reading groups and developing my students' phonemic awareness and letter recognition. The books I chose are focused on WordPlay, rhyme, and the excitement about language. All of these resources will be used for many years and will help my students develop their amazing reading brains!
