My Students

Our school strives to create ethical leaders who are ready to contribute to the betterment of the world at large. The student body is extremely diverse, bringing an array of experiences to each other's lives.

My students are gifted students with a variety of disabilities, learning to become independent thinkers.

In my class, the students focus on discovery and working with others to solve problems, and find purpose in their work and the world at large. The work we do allows students to become life-long learners who learn with and from others.

My Project

As our students move up in grades and high stakes testing becomes more prevalent in their lives, we often lose sight of the fact that our students still need to be engaged in the math and have fun with it, not just learn how to take a test. Our students, especially those with disabilities, need to engage in math in a way that goes beyond test-taking skills. Students need to use manipulatives, have visual representations of the math, and have fun while doing it!

Math should be fun and hands-on for our children.

With the algebra tiles, students can use manipulatives to model linear, quadratic, and exponential functions in a way that allows them to explore these various functions with their own hands. They can also argue and debate these models with their peers, moving around tiles to modify their models. With the balances, students can have hands-on and visual representations of balancing and solving equations, a vital skill for Common Core Algebra I. The card games that address various skills in Common Core Algebra I will be used to engage students in learning and practice, and allow them to have fun while doing it! The games require students to represent various areas of Common Core Algebra multiple ways.

Our students need more than test-taking skills to engage in their learning and practice mathematics. These tools will help them achieve that engagement and fun.
