My Students

Do you remember how tedious it was to learn another language? Imagine how challenging it is for my 6 year old students to learn English as a second language.

My school is composed of new immigrants from China and children from low-income families.

Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to help their children with schoolwork. Some parents don't even live with their children, they must work out of state just to find decent paying jobs. Families are forced to rely on schools to teach their children to be proficient in English compounding an already difficult and frustrating situation at home. While most families hope that their children will enjoy a better future, they face significant obstacles.

My Project

These are the crucial years when students are learning important literacy skills that will serve as the building blocks for their academic careers. The valuable language tools will help them strengthen their skills but will also allow them to take charge of their own learning. For example, one literacy center my students can do is Make a Word Center where they will be paired and instructed to use the reading rods word and word families, and unifix blends cubes to learn about word patterns in order to improve their spelling. The timers will be used to encourage them to build words quickly while having fun. These tools will also provide my students with a more concrete way to familiarize themselves with word patterns and sentence structures. This is just one example of what my students could be doing during center time to make learning fun and enjoyable.

You will make it possible to capture my students’ interests in learning English by offering them options for learning this new language.

These tools will strengthen their language skills while simultaneously making it more enjoyable to learn English. These tools will also allow my students to be more independent in their learning and will help motivate them to make faster progress. With each success, they will be more motivated to persevere in all academic areas.
