My Students

Students might say, “This is disgusting!” but I know they’ll really be thinking, “This is really cool! I learned SO MUCH today!” when they get the opportunity to dissect frogs.

I teach 7th grade science to approximately 60 students in a high-needs school in rural Arkansas.

All students receive free lunch. In elementary school (K-6), math and literacy are heavily emphasized, so students enter junior high school with little knowledge of science. The biggest challenge my students face is Arkansas’s Seventh Grade Science Benchmark test. Doing hands-on investigations and projects will help students retain knowledge and prepare them to be successful. My students love doing experiments and activities, even if they are just with low-cost items. But every year, students ask if we are going to dissect something. I can never promise my students this opportunity, but I can only imagine how students will react when we finally do!

My Project

I am requesting 2 kits of preserved frogs and 7 dissection sets for this project. Our school has goggles and aprons, and I am looking into partnering with another seventh grade science teacher and high school or local community college biology students for this dissection project. My students need to be able to “Analyze the structure and function of tissues, organs, and organ systems of a vertebrate using various models or methods of dissection” (LS.2.7.4). In previous years, my students cut and colored paper models. This project will make science and the body systems of living things real this year.

They will see and touch interconnected organs and organ systems in an actual preserved specimen. One of the best things is that the kits include enough frogs for students to work in pairs and have ample opportunity for a memorable hands-on experience.
