My Students

I want to teach my students about money, investing and budgeting: they’ll study this in school and then bring it home to work on with their parents. Often financial literacy is something that parents teach to their children, yet often parents don’t have those skills either.

My students are an absolute inspiration: the 120 students I see each day represent many countries, cultures, and languages – when I look out at them, I see the world looking back at me.

Despite the wealth of cultural experience in our student population, we are economically underrepresented and a high-poverty school. Our kids are desperately in need of financial literacy if they are going to be able to understand or change their financial situations. With these tools and the budgeting lessons that we will undertake, kids and their families can benefit while ensuring real learning about money. Many families need things like this taught to them as well. While parents might never approach the subject directly, they will happily do it if it is working with their kids on a project for school. Most of all, this is chance a for kids to build good money habits early on.

My Project

With these tools, students will engage in many activities to understand finances and how to deal with money. They will create a realistic personal budget for themselves and their families (this can be kept private and will not be shared in class) with short and long term goals. They will also create a weekly menu and grocery list, including finding coupons and comparison shopping in area food stores. We will study saving and checking accounts so students understand how they work– many students are not familiar with these and many parents do not even have them. Students will also create savings at home with a simple jar system or a piggy bank. We will learn about savings accounts, how interest works and cover fundamental ideas about budgeting, including delayed gratification and prioritizing. Students will use these tablets to explore fun and free websites to learn more. School is the only place many of my students have access to technology.

Financial literacy is an often neglected life skill that my students desperately need.

The will study financial concepts in school and then bring it home to work on with their parents. Often financial literacy is something that parents teach to their children, yet often parents don’t have those skills either. These tools will not only help my students to learn about budgeting and basic finance, but it will help their families learn as well.
