Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I took on the challenge of taking a 6th-grade bilingual class mid-way through the year. Not only are we in full-distance learning, but now they have the challenge of getting used to a new teacher. It has definitely been a year for all of us. They are amazing kids with great hearts.

My sixth graders come from low-income families from Salinas, CA, but that doesn't define them.

They live in the most dangerous neighborhood in town. They are first-generation students who mainly speak Spanish.

The majority of them live in multi-family homes, sharing rooms with multiple siblings. Most of them have a hard time finding a quiet place to do online classes. Regardless of their situation, they believe that education is of great value.

My Project

These snacks will help the students and their families get through these uncertain times. My students often go without as they live in a high-poverty area and a supply of snacks will ensure that no child is hungry and they have something to enjoy. I want them to have snacks they will enjoy during their break since we aren't allowed to have recess because of Covid.

When children's tummies are full, our kiddos are happy.

Often, students' main source of food comes from school having extra snacks that they normally don’t get helps boost their social-emotional well-being.
