My students need Spanish translations of 18 popular young adult, science-fiction, classic, and nonfiction titles-- such as the Twilight series, Lord of the Rings series, Fahrenheit 451, and The Audacity of Hope.

I teach juniors and seniors at a career-centered school. One of my state standards for English 3 and 4 mandates that students “read independently for extended periods of time for pleasure.” Recently, I watched one of my ESL students and realized that reading novels written in English did not give him any pleasure. For his midterm, he has to read a book of his choice and present it to the class in a PowerPoint project. I decided to let him read a book in Spanish and present it in English. One of the main points of the assignment is for students to read a book they’ll enjoy. I thought letting him read a book in his first language would help reach that goal. Requiring him to present the book in English would satisfy the goal of teaching students Standard American English. I knew that I didn’t have any Spanish edition novels in my class, so I went to the school’s library. That’s when I realized that the school did not have any of these books either. At that point, I realized that my plans for this student would be put on hold. Disappointed, but determined, I decided to make it my goal to provide books for the ESL students at my school. I created a list of books my teenagers enjoy reading; then, I searched online to find which books have Spanish editions. I wanted a variety of books: young adult, classics, science-fiction, and memoirs. I was excited to discover the Twilight, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings series are available in Spanish. Obama’s The Audacity of Hope and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 are also among the books I have requested. The ESL students at my school are taught to read, write, speak, and research using Standard American English, as mandated by the state standards. Offering them books in Spanish does not mean I am not helping them learn English; instead, I am removing obstacles so they can read and discuss the same self-selected books their classmates are reading.
