My Students

Many of today's students are quite skilled in using technology for learning and reading. Some students in second grade are not completely ready for reading independently while others are reading above grade level, but may not be completely comprehending what they are reading.

I want to help my students to realize the power of words and how expanding their vocabulary can open up their eyes to a whole new world.

Second grade is a transition year from reading mostly simple words to reading complex text. I want to help those struggling readers to increase vocabulary, and I also want to help those advanced readers to challenge themselves with new vocabulary. When I challenge my students to play vocabulary and phonics games, they are initially very skeptical. But after giving it a try, they realize how challenging and fun it can be at any level. I also want them to be able to read chapter books and complete study guides independently to continue learning and feel the power of being able to read and discuss new words and stories.

My Project

These phonics materials will help my students to be able to independently read chapter books. When they learn phonics patterns they can sound out new words to increase their vocabulary and understanding of what they are reading. As their reading comprehension and fluency increase, their enjoyment of reading will increase as well as their confidence in their ability to read what they want, whether it's fiction or non-fiction books.

Phonics patterns are very valuable to helping students understand more complex texts and will increase their confidence in their reading ability.

As students increase their vocabulary and understanding of what they read, they will be able to start transferring this knowledge to their writing. As their writing skills increase, so will their ability to explain what has been read and understood. This will help students overall in all subject areas as they advance through the grades in school.
