Many of my students come from large family and wear hand-me-downs. To these students, receiving something new is very exciting and a rare treat. Getting some new literacy centers that are that have not been used by previous classes, are colorful, and engaging would mean a lot to them. In second grade, literacy centers are a large part of our daily schedule. Each day, we do two periods (of about 30 minutes each) of Guided Reading. This is a time when a teacher meets with a small group of 4-6 students to read books on the particular level appropriate for that group and to work on their individual comprehension skills. During this time, the rest of the students in the class work independently at literacy centers. These literacy centers need to capture their attention and keep the children interested in the activity for 30 minutes at a time, which for many 6 and 7 year olds is not easy to do. Having a variety of activities that the children can work on independently and that keep them engaged and learning is very important for these periods in the day. The school doesn't provide the centers for us and they are rather expensive to buy, which is why the centers we currently have are all home-made. I try to take ideas from the colorful, exciting centers that I see in the catalogs and prolong the life of the centers by laminating, but they still have a diminished look and feel from the manufactured literacy centers. Also, having a larger variety of centers to work with, the combination of what we already have and these new centers, would keep the students from doing the same activities over and over again and getting bored with them over time. The literacy centers are very important in the second grade and it would be great to receive some new centers to work with. I know that all the students would be excited and grateful for new activities that are colorful and engaging.
