This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an incredible group of hardworking students at a public charter school in urban Los Angeles. As the literacy specialist, the majority of my students struggle to read at grade level despite their hard work and love for learning. As a Title I school, nearly every single student comes from a low-income socioeconomic background, making school an especially important resource. In addition, many students are bilingual and are working to learn English as a second language.

Despite these challenges, my amazing students are determined to overcome any circumstances that might get in the way of their academic success and work hard to achieve grade-level reading.

My Project

The pandemic interrupted students' learning and caused hours and hours of lost in-person instructional time. This year, students and teachers are thankful to learn in-person, and we are working so hard to overcome unfinished learning while still moving forward. This unfinished learning is especially noticed in literacy foundational skills and word decoding.

The materials in this project will allow my striving students to learn and practice literacy skills in fun, research-based, multi-sensory ways.

Students will practice letter formation on textured plastic, on sandpaper cards, or in shaving cream trays. Students will learn and practice letter-sound correspondences and decoding strategies as they read and write at the word level. Finally, students will utilize their reading and spelling abilities at the sentence and text level for the ultimate goal of communication and comprehension.

All of these materials will directly benefit my students in intervention groups who are reading below grade level. My students and I thank you in advance for your support of them as they work hard to achieve their goals!
