My Students

Do you remember being small and loving to play outside? It was so much fun to play in the sun. Many of my Preschool students with special needs have trouble moving their bodies, they like to play outside, but they can not climb on the playground equipment or pedal bikes, so we need balls and hoops.

When I tell my students, it's time to go outside, that's when the screaming begins!

I hear a chorus of," Outside, Outside!" The preschoolers with special needs in my class range from 3 years old to 5 years old. All of the children have some identified special need. Some of them have motor delays that keep them from accessing any play equipment we have at the school. In addition, the majority of my Preschoolers are children identified with a developmental delay in language, as well as being English Language Learners. When we go outside, the language starts flowing, they are screaming, talking, and laughing! My students live in a California low-economic neighborhood in San Fernando Valley. Students come from low income families and 100% of our students participate in the free lunch program. I want to engage my students in outdoor activities and bring their bodies to life!

My Project

My students need P.E. equipment such as Grabballs, six hoops, mini golf set and Universal Ribbon Tails, to enhance their budding gross motor skills. Preschoolers with Special Needs love to play outside having fun in the sun. Resources are limited in this school and I have been unable to find or buy appropriate playground equipment. There is a large structure located just outside of our classroom and some bikes in a shed. Every day there is a mad rush to get outside. When some of the little ones come upon the structure or look at the bikes, they stop in their tracks. Some of them, because of their physical condition, cannot access the apparatus or the bikes. Many of them are just intimidated by the size of the structure and they refuse to try to pedal the bikes. My students need some balls for kicking, bouncing, and catching, some hoops for hopping, and golf set so we can use our arms! With these playground toys, I am certain we can create a fabulous outside playtime while working on gross motor skills.

It is so important that Preschoolers with special needs who have physical and language delays have an incentive to use their bodies.

Many of them come from homes where their families do not understand the importance of exercise, movement, and just playing outside. It is critical for Preschoolers to play outside every day. New accessible playground equipment will enhance their outdoor experience. I expect they will be running around in the sun in no time!
