My Students

"This year I have the pleasure of moving ahead to the second grade along with my students. These children have a wide variety of learning styles and disabilities. Last year, flexible seating was introduced into my classroom and the variety of seating options and sensory input allowed my kids to soar and produce some of their best work yet! I have had the unique opportunity to watch them grow and really get to know their needs as learners, which I can use to support and cultivate their learning into this new year!

This group of students is very diverse. They are intelligent but present with social, emotional and sensory difficulties. They need help from their teachers so that they can learn to balance their desire for order and perfection with an appreciation for surprises and mistakes. They need guidance to self-regulate, explore, and be independent.

My Project

Come September, these amazing students will be walking through our classroom door once again. These items will allow the teaching team to refine classroom management to fit their needs. We have a large population of children with sensory and emotional needs who will benefit from having choices such as the sensory lighting, the gel tiles, and the body sock available when the pressures of the routines and classroom become too much to handle. The iPad cases will protect the iPads allowing the students to move around the classroom more freely to find their "smart seat" where they are most comfortable and can produce their best work. The timers and the color-coded cart will assist with visual organization and management to make tasks more accessible. They will be located throughout the classroom at all times so children can independently access and choose the tools to assist them in order to be successful.

Social and emotional learning can improve positive attitudes towards self and others and increase students academic performance.
