My Students

I teach math to 4 classrooms of bright, energetic, and intelligent third graders. Everyday, they greet me on Zoom with positivity and enthusiasm. My mathematicians are a diverse group of learners, and although they may come from a wide range of backgrounds, languages, and skills, they are eager to learn and try new things. My students attend an elementary school in a community that is highly impacted by poverty. Half of our population qualifies for free or reduced meals.

Despite any challenges they may face in their everyday lives and the challenges we face as we teach and learn from home, they join me in our virtual classroom everyday with a positive attitude and are ready to learn.

My Project

Playing math games for fact practice is something my students always enjoy in class. I have a number games that kids can play using simple items like a deck of cards, or some dice. I also use hands-on activities to teach math, like using pipe cleaners to explore different attributes of shapes. Since we are still in distance learning, those games and activities are not always accessible to my students. By providing my students with their own materials, they will be able to play these games, and do the activity at home.

Math games and hands-on activities make learning fun for my students while helping them reinforce math fact fluency and important concepts.
