Fun and Fitness with Yoga

My Students

My students are eager, energetic, and scholarly. The school is located adjacent to a nature park and wetlands and across the highway from the coast. Enjoying the outdoors is part of their lives. My school is a STEM school so we have a rigorous academic program. Part of our science curriculum involves exploring the local natural community. However, about half my students are from nearby or faraway communities that lack such community gems. My students are highly involved in extra curricular activities ranging from sports teams to scouts to music and art lessons.

My students need more time to be involved in active learning opportunities to maintain engagement.

Their attention spans are quite short. Therefore it is important for them to have physical activity to prepare them mentally for demanding in seat activities. They need to discover the wonderful learning opportunities that abound in the local community.

My Project

A teacher at my school site in 2nd grade often led her students through yoga exercises. This year I have some of those students. Today, my students watched with excitement as that teacher led her students in yoga activities. My students told me of the fun they had learning to do yoga. That teacher even collaborated with another 2nd grade teacher to teach more kids. Half of my students have yoga experience. They asked if we could do yoga, but I cited I did not have the mats or the experience. They insisted I learn and try it out. They added that their 2nd grade teacher could teach me. Then I remembered DonorsChoose. I discussed with the students if they would enjoy having their own mat. A resounding yes and loud cheers echoed through the room when I told them of the possibilities.

The students requested yoga mats so they can properly and comfortably perform the yoga exercises with their own individualized mat and not have to borrow from another teacher.

In order to help introduce them to yoga properly, I'm adding in a book about California Condors that shows yoga poses, and a DVD that has a child leading the poses. We also need agility ladders to help practice gross motor skills and focus while also conditioning our hearts. Two ladders will facilitate more students being able to be engaged in the activities at one time.

Having more experience with yoga will improve their fitness level and abilities to focus. My students need ample experiences that help them focus and calm down. They are highly excitable, and would benefit from a consistent yoga lesson. The agility ladders will allow my students to practice locomotor skills as well as perform cardiovascular exercises to promote better heart health.
