My Students

My students are an eclectic and diverse group of third grades who all come from different cultures, home life, and academic ability. One thing that they do share is the right to have a comfortable learning environment. These kids come to school every day and impress me by craving knowledge, despite any challenges they face - family issues, poverty, hunger, language barriers, learning disabilities, etc. I feel compelled to give them a home away from home to engage in learning in a comfortable space.

My Project

Due to the rigorous curricula we teach every single day, it seems we do not have time to focus on the wellness of our students. Most students come to school hungry and do not take advantage of the free breakfast at our school and then lose focus every passing hour of the day. We expect so much of them and sometimes that just is not possible when you are hungry, tired, bored, or uncomfortable. I like to put myself in situations where I know I will learn the best and I would like to be able to give a space like that to my students as well. Despite what is going on in their lives, they know school is a comfortable space to learn, achieve, and grow.

I am asking for help to feed tummies and brains with this donation of alternate seating to increase a love of reading, and healthy snacks to boost focus and energy..

With these materials, I can show my students that in our classroom comfort is valued, and that I know it is hard to learn when you are hungry or uncomfortable. I see a boost in reading levels or interest in students that are given a choice in how or where they sit during reading, especially in the special education population, so having that choice will help to boost engagement in independent reading and build their fluency. Healthy snacks will allow my students a quick boost of energy during lessons and will enhance their engagement to learn. Any pick-me-up can help to enhance the learning conditions if these students in a high poverty, Title 1 school.
