Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to help supplement and support my middle school science students by providing more opportunities for authentic, hands-on, problem based activities that will require them to work collaboratively. Items like the Balloon Car kit and Roller Coaster kit will offer them the ability to think critically, engage in scientific arguments as well as the engineering process, which I anticipate will be extremely fun as well as challenging for my kids. (The microwave is for our unit on Phase Changes in Matter which requires a safe heat source and the mini-fridge is for storage of perishable materials for labs).

The ability to think critically, while working collaboratively to solve problems are both 21st century skills that are strengthened when students participate in authentic, NGSS aligned science activities; the items in this project will help me to support my students in honing these, and other essential skills/practices.

These skills are crucial for my middle school junior scientists because my kids are primarily from under-represented demographic groups, and our school is in the poorest congressional district in NYC. This limits the number of materials I'm provided with which also limits my ability to help make science more authentic and "alive" for my brilliant little Bronxites. I'm also not able to afford to buy all the supplemental materials I would like, so I'm hoping this avenue will prove fruitful. By funding even one of the items in this project, you can help to support the next Neil deGrasse Tyson. We thank you in advance!
