My Students

My students are growing up in a fast-paced, high-tech world. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in that world. I want to bring the wonder of technology into my English classroom. In order to foster empathy, a love of reading, writing and all the joys they bring, my students must overcome seemingly impossible hurdles. For many, coming to school is a major accomplishment. For others, it’s making a connection to the classwork, teachers but hopefully both. But I believe their future is an inextinguishable flame.

We are a close-knit school with dedicated teachers who truly care about our students.

Our students come from troubled backgrounds, but we are determined to not let them get in the way of their success. Our students are predominantly black and Latino males who flourish when they are allowed to express themselves. Our school is a career and technical education high school in NYC, but like many public schools, we are underfunded. Our computers are outdated and often do not work. We do the best we can, but this project would change the way they view English class.

My Project

I hope to bring my students up to or above their grade level this school year in both reading and writing. Integrating technology into my classroom beyond my PowerPoint lessons is the way to do it. The key is to have the right technology at their fingertips so they can apply those skills to write research papers, create interactive projects, podcasts, blogs, wikis, videos and more, thus better preparing them for our tech-savvy world. Reading will be less of a chore for all students because literature comes in different forms and is adaptable to every learning style and ability. I have the extensive training to guide my students and incorporate these in my lessons; they just need the tools with which to do it.

My students need 5 Chromebooks for access to functioning and updated technology.

I plan to set up a media center in my classroom so students can to do research, papers and multimedia projects in class to improve their writing, literacy and tech skills. There is no greater pleasure than seeing a child’s eyes light up with joy when they see their work come alive via the many different conduits of technology. It can be a book we are reading in class via audiobook, answering questions via blog posts and since my school is a career and tech education school, my class will be interdisciplinary and provide hands-on experience that teaches them about our ever-changing technology and life skills they need to become successful in their careers.
