Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn! They are curious about the world around them. They hunger for the arts.

My students come from a diverse background.

Most are the children of first or second generation, while a handful are from different regions in Mexico and Central America. My elementary, for some of my students, is the most stable and safe environment they have. As an International Baccalaureate school, we are focused on teaching the whole child.

My Project

Students will use the materials in student workstations. The modeling clay will be used in math centers to model geometric shapes. The experience of making the shapes will enhance their understanding of how many vertices and faces the shapes will have. The clay will also be used to make replicas of items they have observed in scientific experiments. The paint supplies will also be used in science study, as well. Headphones will allow students to engage with technology, like tablets and other wireless devices that have been donated to the class. Students' creativity will help them create paintings of observations in our science labs. Students will draw sketches and take notes of the colors and other properties of objects and reproduce them, choosing what to emphasize. Paint supplies will also be used in our literacy block to fully illustrate scenes from plays and books, as well as imagery created by poems. The technology will help engage them with music and apps like Garage Band.

My project will make a difference in the lives of students who do not have any access to the arts at school.

We currently do not have an art or music teacher on campus, so the responsibility to expose them to the fine arts falls on their general education teachers. Adding the arts to the STEM curriculum will help expand students imaginations and understanding of math and science instruction. Using paint, clay, and music, we will expand students' understanding of science, math, and the arts.
