My Students

I strive to create a classroom that facilitates independence for my adventurous, enthusiastic, fun-loving, inquisitive, eager learners. These students come to school everyday to create, explore, and investigate through hands on learning. I teach in a rural school, so many of the children come to me from a migrant household and are yearning for a safe, loving, and comfortable place to learn and grow. My classroom is a second home to my students. They work cooperatively, support and care about each other. We truly become a family during our time together throughout the school year.

My Project

Last year I saw a lack of enthusiasm and a rise in discipline issues throughout my school as students were told to read articles and stories that challenged their reading comprehension but not their interest nor problem solving skills. After listening to the USA Armed Services tout the need for Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) in students, I decided to start with my youngsters.

Implementing a way for students to earn creative, team building challenges shifted the entire temperament of my students to learning and engaging with the more difficult subjects.

Finishing the school year strong had me researching, reading, and revising my thinking on behavior, rewards and the way I encouraged my students to go after the more difficult tasks.

In my reading and research many of the books I am requesting were suggested as used to help develop vocabulary as well as the unfamiliar ideas of ones so young INVENTING and CREATING to solve issues that they encounter in their lives. Having seen the changes in my high energy, mostly boy classroom last year, I can't wait to start with STEM incorporated into their learning, their classroom expectations and behaviors from the beginning of the year and seeing how far we GO!

These books all go along with the new GROWTH MINDSET that I will be implementing in my classroom this year. I would like these books to be the focal point of my read alouds and displayed for the students to explore and interact with on their own time. These books focus on making mistakes, fortitude, ATTITUDE in the face of failure, and building their I can't "YET" mentality changing from giving up to persevering.
