I teach at a public, Title I Impact school in Savannah- Chatham County. My school currently has 90% of the population receiving free or reduced lunch. The word impact by definition means to "have a strong effect on someone or something." As a teacher, this is my goal each day: to make the greatest positive impact on my students.
My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.
My school is certified for English Language Learners that have recently moved to this country. The students come from many different countries around the world. Most of our ESOL students were forced to leave their country of origin because of war, persecution, and/ or extreme poverty. Often times, these children come to us traumatized and find it difficult to adjust to their new surroundings. They are completely unfamiliar with the language and social norms of our country. Despite their plight, these children are expected to perform academically.
Regardless of being from a different country, a single-parent home, or a poverty-stricken neighborhood, my students are bright, energetic, and loving. My hope is to make the greatest impact on my students by offering them a safe and positive learning environment.
My Project
My project is twofold. First, I have added some non- toxic cleaning products to my list. With the COVID 19 pandemic, a solid cleaning regime has become even more necessary. Now that we have students returning to in- person instruction, our class could really use some additional cleaning supplies. These products would really help maintain a safe and healthy environment for our scholars.
Secondly, our school is in the beginning stages of becoming STEAM certified.
We want our students to have the very best opportunities when they are adults entering the workforce. We believe it is important to integrate science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics into our daily instruction. Instead of learning with textbooks and worksheets, we want to build, create, and problem solve! One of the exciting items I am requesting is the Sphero mini robot. This robot will allow my students to use the language of code to direct the robot to complete different commands. This robot can even go underwater!
Our students typically do not have access to STEAM activities, so this will be an exciting way to get us started on our mission to create future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and artists!
