My Project

Each year I choose a subject to focus on so that I can research and implement the highest quality instruction in order to provide the best education for my students. This year I am working on including more STEAM activities in my classroom, and the Cricut machine would allow me to do many STEAM projects. For example:

I want to make thaumatropes, and this one activity would incorporate all of the elements of STEAM.

Science- We will talk about how the eye works and how continuous motion is perceived.

Technology- With my help, the students will use the Cricut software to cut the circles for the thaumatropes and also cut one of the images like a haunted house or a cage.

Engineering- We will investigate how winding the rubber bands on either side of the thaumatropes would impact the spinning. For example, how might twisting the rubber bands a lot have a different effect on the thaumatrope as opposed to twisting the rubber bands only a few times?

Art- Students will draw a picture for the opposite side of their thaumatrope. They could draw bats flying over the haunted house that was cut by the Cricut machine or they could draw a tiger that would be inside the cage that was cut by the Cricut.

Math- We will time the spinning motion and graph it for how long the thaumatrope spins. We will compare these results and draw conclusions about how fast or slow the spinning occurs.
