This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative and eager to build. Kinetic sculptures can help my students develop a passion for art and engineering.

I teach around 90 sixth-grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

I am requesting motors, wires, batteries, LED lights, and crafting supplies that my students will use to build kinetic-circuit sculptures. This project is an example of empowering students through art. After studying circuits, electricity, and magnetism, students will be challenged to design and build kinetic sculptures. As they design a sculpture that draws and a sculpture that lights up, they will synthesize and apply what they have learned about circuits. In addition, students will go through the engineering design process, building valuable skills that they will need in the work world of the future. Students will work share ideas with peers, evaluate and improve on their designs, and use online tools to share their final products with friends and family.

This project combines art with science and engineering.

Student engagement will rise as they get a chance to bring their own designs to life. Help us put the A (art) into our STEM class.
