Our school is centrally located in the Metrotech Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn - an ideal place for the three schools on our campus, all focusing on some aspect of STEM: engineering, technology, and inquiry in math & science. Our students are naturally curious about the world around them - and need a place where they can dig into these questions. The students love the library and we want the library to be a central hub for both academic and personal growth at our campus. Our school recently renovated the library after 5+ years without a librarian. We are busy working to update the print & non-print resources in our collection to serve the needs of our 21st-century learners.
Giving these students the resources they need and deserve sends a message: we value you and we value your education.
My students work hard and want to be here. There are over 1,400 of these passionate and curious learners in grades 6 through 12 in our urban school, and they now have a space of their own to exercise those skills. I can't wait to help them grow into enthusiastic readers, ethical users of information, skillful researchers, and critical thinkers.
Our students are creative and eager to play! These materials will be welcome additions to our library MakerSpace we have been building this year. Open-ended and flexible activities such as bringing our digital designs to life with the vinyl cutter, creating 3D models using the 3Doodler, or coding our robots to complete a task are excellent ways to get students engaged in the creative process of STEAM and design thinking. The library has become a central learning commons in our building for books, technology, and learning. These materials would provide a creative way for both students and teachers to connect their curriculum goals with STEAM and design-thinking goals, especially as our schools all focus on problem-based tasks at the culmination of each unit.
With these new materials, our students will have new opportunities to tinker, play, and create in the library MakerSpace as well as share their learning outcomes with peers and teachers.
I have seen first-hand how creative choice has positively impacted student engagement and buy-in to their learning goals. These materials will help support both teachers and students in reaching and exceeding these goals!
