Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year my students will be my first full class (120 8th graders) to spend their entire middle school experience during COVID. They spent all of 6th grade in remote/hybrid instruction and all of 7th grade in the craziness of bringing back in-person instruction with COVID protocols. Needless to say, their learning experiences have been dramatically different than pre-COVID middle schoolers. Their needs are different. Their stamina is different. Their focus is different. They are often hungry, tired, and unfocused in class. I learned last year that many students do not eat breakfast or lunch or they eat unhealthy options that don't sustain their energy and focus. I not only teach math to my students, I teach them the habits of mind and body that make them the best learners they can be.

Having healthy and energizing snacks on hand for a quick pick-me-up would have more students focused and learning for more of the school day.

Instead of losing a student's focus for an entire period, that student could take a 3-5 minute break, grab a snack from the snack cabinet in the classroom, and get refocused and energized and back to learning quickly.
