My Students
I teach Spanish to bright, motivated and talented students with very diverse social-economic backgrounds ranging from impoverished to a few prosperous. They have been learning about Hispanic culture through language, reading, cooking, singing, and dance lessons.
But given the demographics of our school, they have not had big exposure to diversity.
I'm working to introduce them to Hispanic culture through field trips and through my own experiences. I grew up in the Dominican Republic, and I frequently tell them about my life. I aim to greatly broaden their horizons.
My Project
As part of our Spanish Language Program, our students are invited to borrow a book from our classroom library and read for 10 minutes during each of their 3 weekly Spanish classes. In just this quarter, our students have turned pages faster than what I can supply. This success is thanks to the first part of this project. Now we are presenting "The sequel" to bring more books into the library that serves nearly 156 students.
My students are talented and motivated and want to read, but need additional fun and engaging reading materials.
Another reason for keeping a classroom library is the fact that independent reading has been proven to be the best vehicle for language learning that's geared toward the student's individual abilities.
Please help me fund and develop the students' reading habits with fun and engaging Spanish books.
