My Project

My students are enthusiastic, energetic, and eager learners but they need a little boost to get them through their long school day. Our students have a really early lunch, so we have incorporated snack time in the afternoon to ensure that they can get their needs met when they begin to feel hungry in school. It's also important for our students to have the opportunity to eat a snack before their long bus ride home. Some of our students are able to bring in a snack from home, but others are not.

This project will provide snacks for students to choose from during snack time.

All students will have access to our school's snack station so that none of the students feel left out. We piloted this project last year and it was a huge success! We were able to support over 40 students by giving them a snack for our scheduled snack time. When a student did not bring a snack to school or asked for a snack, a staff member was able to bring them to my office to choose a snack from our bin. This also encouraged them to connect with more adults in the building and gave them an extra opportunity to practice their social and self-advocacy skills. Students have been hoping that our snack station will be refilled and I was able to get their input for snacks that we should request. In addition to food items, we are also requesting some cleaning supplies so that students can clean up their spaces once they have finished their snacks.

We will be meeting the students' most basic needs and supporting their dignity by making snack time more equitable at school.
