My Students

My students need to touch, draw, see models and act out the transformations of minerals in order better understand earth science.

We are very diverse, culturally and socio-economically, ranging from free lunch to middle income.

Our school is relatively old and funky but the setting is wonderful as it looks out on parkland in two directions. Academically they range from very challenged to the occasional gifted child with everything in between.

My Project

The video equipment will allow us to watch and analyze acting out. The models and minerals will enable us to envision the differences in rocks and minerals. There is also a lot of miscellaneous things necessary to keep a classroom rich in digital technology running. (I'm building an interactive white board using a Wii remote). If I am awarded the Chevron Classroom Challenge I will be able to similarly set up the other classrooms with IWBs.

We thoroughly enjoy learning earth science.

We do an extensive unit, 4 days/week, 50 minutes/day for two groups of students (about 80+ days/group). I'm also helping the sixth grade teacher with his plate tectonics standard. We act out molecules, earthquakes and more (thus the video equipment). We explore a nearby mountain for 250 million years of geological history (thus the GPS unit). I'm deeply committed to STEM education as an anchor for all learning.
