Fruit Fly Genetics

My students need to see how genetics affect our bodies. This lab does that by showing how flies are affected by our genes.

My Students

How do we really know genes affect our bodies? What if you could see it with your own eyes? The connection between genes and our bodies is difficult for students to understand, but this lab helps students see the effects by studying fruit flies.

This is for my 9/10 Integrated Biology course, which I teach 4 period of.

My students are very diverse ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically. Last year we had almost 80% of our students on free and reduced lunch. College is a goal that we set for all our students and we try our best to get them there. This lab is similar to what happens in college, and I hope that it will inspire students to learn more in the future. Additionally, 26.1% of our students are transitional bilingual students. They're in English Language classes. Also 14.7% of our students have special needs. A lab like this serves students because they can learn by doing as well as reading and writing. This sets them up for success because it gives them background knowledge. This also benefits my students who are successful already because it pushes them to consider how other aspects of the fly body are affected by genes.

My Project

These resources provide us with fruit flies with known genes. By breeding them, we will learn about the flyless fruit flies. In particular we can study their eye color and wing types to learn about dominant and recessive traits. Additionally, through this we can help students see the usefulness of Punnet squares for Mendelian traits.

This project will help students be a part of science that has been inaccessible before.

Our budget is currently at $0, and we have not had the money to buy materials for awhile. Without support this project, students will have limited opportunities to really see science in action under a controlled environment.
