Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Autism is not a disability, it's a different ability." - Stuart Duncan

My classroom is comprised of a group of amazing students who are all identified with autism.

With the autistic spectrum creating a broad spectrum of abilities cognitively and behaviorally, we have many different strategies to have the students working towards their highest potential.

Among my students, some are also identified with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Speech and Language Impairment. Half of the students are nonverbal and receive ESOL services. All students receive speech and occupational therapy services.

These students love to explore new things, hear new stories, and be involved with their school events!

My Project

We have some big changes this year in our classroom. Unfortunately, we had a water leak in our room at the end last school year. While items were salvaged, every single thing needed to be emptied out. The floor needed to be torn apart and we will need to start fresh this year from top to bottom!

Another important topic is that our autistic support class is maturing.

We are moving up to grades 2-4 (which will eventually be a classroom for grades 3-5). I'd really like to main stream our students to the regular education curriculum as much as they can. I'd like to get headphones that they can really complete Dreambox, Lexia, Study Island, etc. on an independent level. These headphones would also maintain a sensory environment that is suitable for everyone.

A comfortable environment with an area rug and an enclosed space for a quiet area will be a new for the students now that the sensory room will be separated from the classroom and tile will now be our floor instead of carpet. Lets have our students transition back into their classroom the easiest way possible!
